Preserving the Stories of Central Montana's Missouri River Country

The Big Sky Country National Heritage Area is a volunteer-led nonprofit working to celebrate, preserve, and share the history, culture, and landscapes of Montana's Upper Missouri River region—from Fort Benton through Cascade County.

This is a place where Indigenous traditions, river commerce, agriculture, industry, exploration, and community life have shaped a landscape of national significance. From the Lewis and Clark portage around the Great Falls to the historic communities, ranches, museums, and landmarks that define the region today, our heritage continues to influence who we are and where we are going.

We work with local communities, historical societies, museums, tribal partners, and civic organizations to support preservation projects, educational programs, heritage tourism, and community development. Through grants, partnerships, and public outreach, we help ensure that the stories of this remarkable region are preserved and shared for future generations.

Our goal is simple: to strengthen local communities by connecting people with the places, stories, and traditions that make Montana's Upper Missouri River country unique.

Community Partnerships
